King of Aces, Queen of Hearts

Kis reserved for the King of Aces, Queen of Hearts and the show of hands by power pair Nupts & Such and La Flaire at The Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. When I got the e-mail from Eileen, I instantly knew this would be an Ace up her sleeves. I’m humming to Viva Las Vegas as I’m posting this up simply because the decoration is so captivating! If you’ve seen their previous Passionate Red event and loved every bit of it, then you would break out in a gyrating Elvis signature dance pose when you see these photos from the wedding of William and Adelena but don’t be misled because it’s a far cry from the stereotyped Vegas-themed parties. This wedding is tastefully done, dangerously sexy yet elegantly jazzy and almost burlesque. The sublime ante of Vegas were evident yet understated. A beautiful play indeed.

Here’s the ‘full monty’ from the wedding planner, Eileen Lui: The couple wanted an interesting theme to go with their chosen colours – Black and red for their wedding. It took a bit of a long process to get the right theme because both of them had different views and personalities as well. When we came up with the Las Vegas theme, both Adelena and William totally embraced this theme and to take it one step further – their honeymoon (as we write this) is in Las Vegas!

The entire wedding decor, from table linens to the designer chair covers to the custom-made table centrepieces were specially designed by the creative director from the La Flaire team. Part of the decor which also doubled up as a guest escort card were the specially printed poker chips which helped remind guests of their assigned table numbers. The Vegas-themed invitation card and couple’s monogram was designed by a family friend who is an award-winning creative director in Malaysia. We used the existing Martin Architectural Lighting at Westin to create the Vegas effect – a bit of mystery, a bit of snazziness. Something interesting for the couple’s entrance was them being sporting enough to do a song. They did a duet to the song ‘Lucky’ by Jason Mraz for their grand entrance, accompanied by Adelena’s cousin on the guitar.

Adelena and William have also pledged a donation to the Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better Organization from the budget allocated for wedding favours. Thus, for the wedding favours, we had created cookies molded in the shape of hearts and clubs with their personal message gift tags announcing that they have made a donation on behalf of the guests. We at Nupts & Such constantly encourage our clients to partake in noble causes!

5 Minutes with Eileen Lui {MYS, KHM}

1) WHEN ARE YOU HAPPIEST?
This is a tough one! I am happy doing a lot of things…. I guess, I am happiest when I am celebrating Chinese New Year with my family back in the kampong and this is just around the corner!! Woohoohooo!

2) WHAT ARE THE FIVE KEYWORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOUR WORKING STYLE?
Anal, Meticulous, OCD-ly Organised, Focused, Flexible

3) THE MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOU.
That I am a Snow Queen with a heart of ice 😛

4) WHAT DRIVES (MOTIVATES) YOU?
Reaching the goal post – whether it is seeing an event come to life, finishing a race or writing a story.

5) CURRENT SONGS IN YOUR PLAYLIST/JUKEBOX?
Hey Soul Sister – Train
Hold My Hand – Michael Jackson & Akon
High – Lighthouse Family

6) QUOTES YOU LIVE BY
“The mind, once expanded by a new idea, can never return to its original dimensions” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

7) YOU’RE A WEDDING PLANNER, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, YOU’RE ALSO THE EDITOR OF JOURNEYS FOR TWO. HOW DO YOU JUGGLE BETWEEN THESE TWO ROLES AND STILL KEEP A FAIR AND PRAGMATIC VIEW, IN YOUR ROLE AS AN EDITOR AND AS A WEDDING PLANNER?
It isn’t so much as juggling the two roles. I see it more as how do I complement both the roles to achieve even better outcome in both of it. As an editor, I need to write on recommended venues for wedding celebration around the region. Having been to these places and done wedding planning at some of these places help in the writing process. Admittedly, certain venue or location evokes different emotions for me. When I get a bit too emotional in the writing, my Managing Editor slaps me back into reality.

8 ) “PERHAPS IT IS BETTER TO BE IRRESPONSIBLE AND RIGHT, THAN TO BE RESPONSIBLE AND WRONG.” YOUR TAKE ON THIS.
Errr…. are you referring to my Nude Photography thingy that is being slammed left, right & center in the news? Life is short. LIVE IT. I’d rather have 2 minutes of a “one-helluva-experience” than living the rest of my life in regret.

9) EPIC LOVE MOVIE.
Titanic!!!  Wait….. is this going public????

10)  WHAT’S SEXY?
Wit, humour and a nice, rounded a**

11) SUGGEST YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO DRESS UP, AND DRESS DOWN IN CAMBODIA.
Dress-Up for a little something-something before dinner at the Elephant Bar, Raffles Hotel then move on to dinner at La Residence before heading up to Le Moon Sky Bar to unwind your week’s stresses…

Dress-Down for a sunset river cruise with BYOs and then move on to an awesomely sweaty-hot & delicious dinner at a local BBQ joint with beers and creepy crawlies

For a really nice and meaningful Dress-Down, I suggest voluntary work at an orphanage. Can’t believe I’ve been doing this for 18 months already!!

12) YOUR TIPS/ADVICE TO COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING IN CAMBODIA (DESTINATION WEDDING).

Language can be a big problem here especially with the public transportation (You watched the episode of Amazing Race and they were in Cambodia, needing to get to Raffles? ALL the tuk-tuk drivers said Yes, yes, I know and brought the contestants to the blady Royal Palace. That’s Welcome To Cambodia for you).

If you could hire a locally-based wedding planning company to make the arrangements for you, that would be the best piece of advice because they would know how to get things done local-wise and they know what it actually means when somebody tells you “Yes, yes, I know.”

Cambodia – aside from the much commercialised and publicised Angkor Wat, has many other places to offer – which is yet to be ruined by over-population of tourists and commercialisation. But you’d have to be willing to be a little adventurous, love the old world charms and the romantic notions of memories gone by.

Passionate Red

What better way to bid farewell to two-thousand-and-ten and welcome the new year with a BOLD, passionate wedding! I would have loved to be a guest at this wedding. A visually stunning styling of intimate, Viking style setting with a killer colour combo of fiery red, maroon and majestic purple. I never knew red on red (and so much red) could look SSssooooooo good!! Another fantastic wedding tastefully done by event couturier, La Flaire. Once guests walked into the venue, they were instantly enveloped by a very powerful sense of energy, which totally summed up the personality of the couple, bold, daring and sophisticated. Passionately so ..

For this post, WedInk Tattle decided to speak to the designers at La Flaire on the conceptual part of decor.

Why did you choose these specific colours?
La Flaire: The clients were gamed on having something bold and oozing with passion. So we created a set that had contrasting colours despite both the colours being bold.

What were the details incorporated into the wedding?
La Flaire: We had draped the entire venue in maroon fabric and the deep purple was just an accentuating colour to add to the mix. We had deep purple incorporated into the napkins, chair sashes, and roses. The rest were all maroon! Very passionate indeed!

Any challenges you faced in planning the wedding?
La Flaire: Well, we were apprehensive at first at the colours – two bold, contrasting colours. However, we presented a mock-up set to the clients and they loved it!

Any advice to readers on working with colours?
La Flaire: Wedding colours need not just be romantic pastels…. think about bold, contrasting colours to make a marked impression on the guests as they enter your reception venue.

Whimsical Elegance – Ben & Clarine

‘Tis the season of holly, jolly fun and since we’re very much in the holiday spirit, we’d like to entice you with a little fun and whimsy from one of Malaysia’s finest. Planned by Nupts & Such and designed by La Flaire, these creative planners transformed the classic ballroom of Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur into a fantasy wonderland by combining the whimsical peculiarity of Alice in Wonderland with the stunning effects of sci-fi movie, Avatar. It’s certainly not easy to combine two themes (especially two … very dramatic themes which are far apart in style and creative direction) into one wedding within clients’ budget, and to do it with such flair and elegance, is really magical. They even had a little ‘play’ area for kids. How cool is that!

From the Designer: Granted that the couple were fans of the movies, we set about creating something that would depict the movie themes, yet – has all the significant romantic notions of a wedding. Voila! The couture decor turned out to be a stunning fusion of romantic elegance and a little whimsical, and a little sci-fi.

For the Alice In Wonderland theme – it was only outside the ballroom, catered for the Pre-Dinner Cocktail. We had paraphernalia similar to those from the movie and we also had a full candy-bar reception with all the colourful treats and snacks!

For Avatar, it was for the dinner reception in the ballroom and we had the table centrepieces reflecting the movie as well as the backdrop and the whole mood and ambience right down to the lightings. We needed to re-create the movies into real life here and we were careful of ensuring that we brought out the movie themes at one glance.

Words of Advice from the Planner: This is a once-in-a-lifetime affair for you and as such – do something that will make you the most happy! If it is flowers you do not want, then just don’t get flowers even though people might look at you horrified! Remember, this is your wedding and you can personalize it as much as you wish.
